October 2009

President Jathan Fink

Dear Members and Friends,

October is one of my favorite months of the year. There is a crisp, fresh quality to the air that wasn’t there before. The leaves begin to catch fire in a brilliant display of color. And college football (and soccer) are in full swing, giving us ample opportunity to go out and root for our favorite team!

For J-School students, October also signifies the arrival of deadlines: whether they are for those stories you’re writing for The News Record, covering for Uptown or writing for one of Jenny’s magazine writing classes. But this month also offers up some exciting opportunities for you too.

First, the SPJ Central Ohio Chapter will host the Law and Media Conference on Friday, October 2nd in Columbus, Ohio. Journalists, lawyers, judges and academics will discuss topics like “sexting,” legal issues in the digital age, journalist privilege and more. And students only pay $15 to register. Visit our events page for details.

The Greater Cincinnati Pro Chapter also invites you to join them for the 2009 Ohio SPJ Awards Banquet on Saturday, October 3rd aboard the Belle of Cincinnati riverboat in Newport, Kentucky. Network with the pros and watch as professional and student journalists receive well deserved recognition for a job well done. Click here for more information.

And don’t forget about Coffee Connections, your chance to let your hair down after a long week of hard work. Our first event was a success as students and faculty gathered at Baba Budan’s to swap stories, catch up, and ultimately, just to relax with their peers. If you weren’t able to join for the first event, catch up with us this week. Coffee Connections will be held every Friday at 4 p.m. and will be at Baba’s for the remainder of October.

If you’re looking to get involved with SPJ in a more serious role, consider stopping by the SPJ Executive Board meetings on the first and third Mondays of each month. We love getting input from members, and anytime you want to lending hand, we will gladly accept your help as well. These meetings are held in 645C Steger Student Life Center at 7 p.m. We hope to see you there!

Finally, I would also like to take this opportunity to invite you to get involved on campus, rack up community service hours if you need them, and make friends in the process. The Clifton Community Cleanup happens this weekend on Saturday, October 4th at 1 p.m. To participate all you have to do is show up. Everything you need will be provided, including free food! You don’t have to bring anything but a willing spirit. Send an email to clifton.community.cleanup@gmail.com for further information.

As you can tell, October is a busy month, and we will keep you posted about further developments as they appear. We’re really happy to have you on board and look forward to seeing you at one of our future events!

Happy autumn!

Jathan
