SPJ presents two new events in November!

Posted by Jathan Fink on October 22, 2009

Hello everyone!

I’m writing to tell you about two upcoming programs you won’t want to miss!

First, SPJ presents State of Play, a terrific journalistic thriller that I found simply riveting! Bring your popcorn and pop and hang out with us for a suspenseful ride through Washington, D.C. I know you’ll love this tightly woven movie.

Then, in mid-November, SPJ presents An Evening with Jay Stowe. A long-time editor who has worked at some of the best magazines in the business. Now with Cincinnati Magazine, Jay will help us navigate the publishing industry as only he can, with candor and wit.

We’re sure you’ll enjoy both of these fantastic programs. Come out and show your support so we can continue to bring you more great programming in coming months.

Best,

Jathan

State of Play

SPJ presents State of Play

Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, 7 p.m., Campus Recreation Center 3240

SPJ’s Executive Board meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m., then will be followed by a general member meeting at 7:15 p.m.

Following the meeting, SPJ will present the hit film, State of Play.

Film Synopsis: A petty thief is gunned down in an alley and a Congressman’s assistant falls in front of a subway – two seemingly unrelated deaths. But not to wisecracking, brash, newspaper reporter, Cal McAffrey, who spies a conspiracy waiting to be uncovered. With a turbulent past connected to the Congressman and the aid of ambitious young rookie writer Della Frye, Cal begins uprooting clues that lead him to a corporate cover-up full of insiders, informants, and assassins. But as he draws closer to the truth, the relentless journalist must decide if it’s worth risking his life and selling his soul to get the ultimate story.

Film stars Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams and Helen Mirren. Rated PG-13.

Jay Stowe

SPJ presents An Evening with Jay Stowe

Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, 7 p.m., Campus Recreation Center 3240

Jay Stowe, editor of Cincinnati Magazine, will discuss his life as a magazine editor, the future of the magazine industry, the need for long-form narrative non-fiction, and more.

Although this program was designed with journalists in mind, writers and others interested in the publishing industry are welcome to attend.

More about Jay Stowe: Cincinnati native Jay Stowe began his career at Smart Magazine in New York in the fall of 1990 as an associate editor. Within three months, Smart folded, and Stowe managed to land a job as an editorial assistant at Esquire, where he worked until 1993. From Esquire he went to Spin, where he edited the front of the book, music and pop culture criticism, and features. In 1995, he joined The New York Observeras a senior editor, where he wrote and reported the Off the Record media column, edited feature stories, and generally had the best time of his life as a journalist so far. (It was even better than being a soda jerk at Graeter’s, which he once was.) In 1999, he took a job withOutside Magazine, serving as features editor and then executive editor until 2004, when he left to edit Cincinnati Magazine. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in history.

New Member Goal

Posted by Jathan Fink on October 8, 2009

Target

Hi folks!

Following the annual convention this summer, we felt that it would be a great idea to turn UC SPJ into a four-star, top-notch chapter!

Reaching this goal will take work on everyone’s part. Yet is a very attainable goal.

First, we need to set a new member goal and reach it. After the Executive Board met on Monday, we decided that we should be able to add 25 new members to the organization by year end.

That’s where you come in! Please tell your friends about SPJ and encourage them to get involved.

Remember, UC SPJ is not limited just to J-school students! We are open to everyone on campus, although we may be of particular interest to folks in PR, writers of all kinds, and folks in E-Media.

Then, once you tell them about us, send us an e-mail with their contact information and we’ll do the rest!

Please let us know if you have any questions. You may reach us by simply clicking on Contact Us. We’ll be sure to get back with you right away.

We’d like to thank you in advance for your commitment to making UC SPJ the best organization it can be!

Best regards,

UC SPJ Executive Board

October 2009

Posted by Jathan Fink on October 1, 2009

President Jathan Fink

Dear Members and Friends,

October is one of my favorite months of the year. There is a crisp, fresh quality to the air that wasn’t there before. The leaves begin to catch fire in a brilliant display of color. And college football (and soccer) are in full swing, giving us ample opportunity to go out and root for our favorite team!

For J-School students, October also signifies the arrival of deadlines: whether they are for those stories you’re writing for The News Record, covering for Uptown or writing for one of Jenny’s magazine writing classes. But this month also offers up some exciting opportunities for you too.

First, the SPJ Central Ohio Chapter will host the Law and Media Conference on Friday, October 2nd in Columbus, Ohio. Journalists, lawyers, judges and academics will discuss topics like “sexting,” legal issues in the digital age, journalist privilege and more. And students only pay $15 to register. Visit our events page for details.

The Greater Cincinnati Pro Chapter also invites you to join them for the 2009 Ohio SPJ Awards Banquet on Saturday, October 3rd aboard the Belle of Cincinnati riverboat in Newport, Kentucky. Network with the pros and watch as professional and student journalists receive well deserved recognition for a job well done. Click here for more information.

And don’t forget about Coffee Connections, your chance to let your hair down after a long week of hard work. Our first event was a success as students and faculty gathered at Baba Budan’s to swap stories, catch up, and ultimately, just to relax with their peers. If you weren’t able to join for the first event, catch up with us this week. Coffee Connections will be held every Friday at 4 p.m. and will be at Baba’s for the remainder of October.

If you’re looking to get involved with SPJ in a more serious role, consider stopping by the SPJ Executive Board meetings on the first and third Mondays of each month. We love getting input from members, and anytime you want to lending hand, we will gladly accept your help as well. These meetings are held in 645C Steger Student Life Center at 7 p.m. We hope to see you there!

Finally, I would also like to take this opportunity to invite you to get involved on campus, rack up community service hours if you need them, and make friends in the process. The Clifton Community Cleanup happens this weekend on Saturday, October 4th at 1 p.m. To participate all you have to do is show up. Everything you need will be provided, including free food! You don’t have to bring anything but a willing spirit. Send an email to clifton.community.cleanup@gmail.com for further information.

As you can tell, October is a busy month, and we will keep you posted about further developments as they appear. We’re really happy to have you on board and look forward to seeing you at one of our future events!

Happy autumn!

Jathan
